The crew at The Shake UP are continually thankful for having the opportunity to watch people change their lives for the better.
Most of us are surrounded by people who are wanting to change, or who are unhappy with where they are – physically, mentally or emotionally. One of the things that we are thankful for in The Shake UP Community is that we are constantly witnessing people’s positive change. There is nothing more rewarding than watching somebody working hard to achieve a goal, helping them along the way, and then to see them reap the rewards once they get there.
Dom Olsen is one of our newest members, but one that has attacked her training with the attitude necessary to make the changes that we all strive for. Dom has made rapid improvements in her training as well as her attitude towards exercise – but she is by no means finished. She began this journey in November to “lose a little weight” but has already recognised that exercise does more than just shed the unwanted extra layers we tend to accumulate – Dom now sees exercise as a way to “..have a better life. I want to be healthy.”
In the 3 months that Dom has been with us, we have watched her grow from someone who was battling with every rep, just willing the end of each workout to come quicker, to someone with a fierce determination to get as much out of every workout that she can! We love it Dom!
Dom has just finished 4 years of study and is now working as a Midwife. The pressure of such an important, stressful job makes it harder for Dom to fit everything into her busy life as a Wife, Mother, Midwife and now Shaker, but that same determination that we see in her training allows her to make it all work.
Keep it up Dom, you’re a super-star.
We asked Dom a few questions to see what keeps it all going, and here’s what she had to say:
Tell us a little bit about yourself Dom.
Well, I’m a Midwife…just. I’ve got 2 kids, Oliver and Abigail who are 7 and 5 years old. I’ve just spent 4 years studying and I’m about to start working as a Midwife.
You’ve been a part of The Shake UP Community since November, what was it that brought you here?
Initially I wanted to lose weight, but now I want to have a better life, I want to be healthy.
When I was studying, I sat at a desk all day or I worked a 12 hour shift – it wasn’t healthy, I just didn’t feel well.
I put on a bit of weight so now I’m just trying to feel better and be better and to get a little stronger.
What is it that gets you through a tough workout Dom?
I’m a little bit competitive. What I love about group training is that you watch everyone else, and I think “If they can do it, I can do it.”
When my brain is saying ‘I can’t do this’ I just tell it to shut up and just keep going and keep telling myself ‘you can do it!’ And it’s a short amount of time, so you just keep telling yourself to push through. At the start when I couldn’t do it, I felt disappointed, but now I feel better about myself because I can get through the workouts.
What keeps you coming back to The Shake UP?
It’s fun! It’s good, it’s a good way to start the day. I’m not a morning person, but I feel better going home after a workout. I feel better health wise, it’s a good motivator and I feel guilty if I don’t go. If I miss a workout, by 9 o’clock I’ve got too much energy – what do I do?!?! I should have gone to The Shake UP!!
And of course, the people are nice.
Can you tell us which exercise is your least favourite?
It changes all the time. At the moment, it’s Bear Crawls. It used to be the Ropes, but after you showed me how to use them properly they don’t hurt as much. Before that it was Burpees and Thrusters, but they’re not so bad now that my core is stronger and my technique is better.
Congratulations Dom and thanks again for the constant effort and energy you bring to each session. We are stoked to have you as a part of the Shake UP community.
