Overweight, uninspired and about to turn 40!

8 months ago Luke was rapidly approaching 40 and had kind of lost his mojo. He was enjoying too many cold beers after a big day of roofing. He was fueling his days with Coca Cola and starchy foods and was well and truly on his way to being the overweight, 40 year old dad who struggles to keep up with his kids.

Luke runs Pacific Pines Roofing, he has 3 young kids and the thought of getting the ‘Wellness Wheels’ back in motion was a pretty daunting prospect!

Big lifestyle changes are a tough thing to initiate and sometimes just accepting our current situation appears to be the best option.

Luke had the one essential ingredient to change on his side…His emotional reason WHY!

With his 40th birthday in sight and the desire to be an influential father, Luke did what so many people refuse to do – He stepped outside of his comfort zone and took massive action!

We recently caught up with Luke to hear about how he rediscovered his mojo:

G’day Luke… Tell us a bit about yourself.

Ok, I recently turned 40 years old. I have 3 kids – Lachlan 12, Cameron 10 and Kate 6. My beautiful wife Hayley and I have been married for 15 years. I own my own business – Pacific Pines Roofing. Life is pretty busy with running the business, coaching my son’s football team and being a father. I am feeling pretty bloody great at the moment. This is the fittest and healthiest I have been in a long time.

How long have you been at training with us?

About 8 months now. Around September last year I was pretty unhappy with where I was physically and who I was becoming. I was probably drinking too much and eating foods that I thought were reasonably healthy. Looking back now, after completing the Challenge I know that those foods that I was eating weren’t doing me any favours!

How did the 10 Week Challenge change your life?

It gave me the kick up the ass I needed. I turned 40 this year and I made a promise to myself that I’d get myself back in shape for my 40th Birthday. I am pretty busy running my business and I guess i used that as an excuse to eat whatever was around and drink a couple of cans of coke every day. I don’t really drink soft drinks anymore and when I think back to those kinds of habits it makes me realise that I just feel so much better for it!

The Challenge gave me a better understanding of how important food is. Hayley and I joined the challenge together and between the 2 of us, I think we have lost about 22kg since November last year!

It’s funny, it wasn’t that long ago that I would drive past The Shake UP, see everyone training here and think to myself…’What the hell are they all doing down there’? I didn’t really have any interest in this kind of thing. Hayley and I decided to give it a shot because we live right around the corner and the thought of being overweight and out of shape at my 40th Birthday was pretty daunting!

Now we can’t get enough of it! We are both fitter, stronger and really enjoying being a part of this community!

What keeps you coming back to The Shake UP?

Ha…The fact that it’s a 5 minute walk from home! It’s not just that it’s that it’s really convenient for Hayley, the kids and I to come down here together. Everyone here is friendly and supportive so it makes it pretty easy to find the motivation to turn up.

What’s the toughest part of our training for you?

Um…it’s all pretty hard! The lunges are probably the worst. It gets more enjoyable as you get fitter and stronger.

I am aiming for a level 12 on the Beep Test over the next couple of months!

This is the reason that The Shake UP was created! To enjoy inspirational stories like Lukes! For all of his hard work, our Shaker of the Month has scored himself a remedial massage with Andrew from Raynor Massage. Andrew is a mobile massage therapist who is getting some fantastic results with his clients. Regular intense training does require regular body maintenance and we strongly recommend seeing Andrew to help keep you in the game longer!
