Sue Leebeek, Shaker of the Month, June ’14

Most of us can relate to being out of condition, overweight and feeling too far gone to redeem our health and fitness!

It becomes a vicious circle, revolving around inaction, poor choices and a negative mental state!
What direction life takes from there is up to us… Some surrender to the struggle and others dust themselves off and go again.

At 57 years of age, Shake UP legend Sue Leebeek knows what its all about! We recently caught up with our June Shaker of the Month to chat about finding time in a busy schedule, intense training at 57 years old and playing for the Harlem Globe Trotters!

So Suzi, tell us a little bit about yourself…

Well I am a very positive 57 year old who is just loving life!
I work as a PA at Coolangatta Police station, where I oversee 36 officers and take care of the domestic violence portfolio for Coolangatta  court.

So you are a pretty busy girl then ha?

Yep, I sure am! I always find time for my Shake UP training though. It’s pretty full on in our work environment so I need to clear the head with 3 high intensity training sessions each week.

How long have you been involved with the Shake UP Suzi?

Well it’s been 15 months I guess, since the Shake UP began for me. I started up at Pacific Pines and am now training at Palm Beach as I can get in and train there before going to the station.

What been your biggest challenge in these last 15 months?

Biggest challenge for me has been getting an overweight, inflamed body to function. The 1st couple of weeks were a major challenge which since overcoming, I will never look back!

So what are your current goals Suzi? What are you going after?

I would love to run the Gold Coast Marathon 10km run next year. That, and continue to lose body fat. Most importantly though for me it’s really about staying mentally fit and strong so I can best deal with life’s obstacles.
Do you think I have missed my shot at the Harlem Globe Trotters? Basketball was my sport in my younger days!

Awesome….

So you are turning 57 in November, how do you feel about being in a training environment with 20 year old guys and girls?

I love it! The Shake UP is all about team work, one giant team of supportive people coming together with a common interest. You can’t beat that!

What’s the worst exercise or workout?

Burpees, only because I can’t really do them. I am getting better though!

Bear Crawling at 57 years of age, 18kg’s lighter and enough spirit to lift the energy at a dawn busting 5.30am mid winter Shake UP session. We believe this is very worthy of the Zarraffas Shaker of the Month for June.
You will usually find our Shaker of the Month enjoying the warm coffee culture that Bernadette, Jimmy and the entire crew have created at Zarraffas Pacific Pines. Thanks for your amazing support guys! $50.00 worth of amazing coffee should get you through the winter Suzi!
