Paul Shaw, Shaker of the Month, Feb’16

5 months ago we had 2 new members come to the Shake UP for a 7 Day free trial.This couple were overweight, very out of shape, struggling with low energy levels and terrified at the mere thought of participating in a Shake UP session.

Their initial Shake UP experience was monumental for 2 reasons:

  1. It was the turning point for this very determined couple.
  2. It was one of our greatest learning experiences as a fitness business.

The lesson that we took out of this experience is that we will never underestimate anyone’s capabilities or desire to change!

This 1st training session for Paul Shaw and his wife Danelle was disastrous, defeating and exactly wOpen_day_05.09.15hat this couple needed to Shake them out of their comfort zone and the rut that we all find ourselves in from time to time.

What we admire most about Paul and Danelle Shaw is that they dusted themselves off, came back two nights later and did it all again!

In the 5 months since Paul Shaw joined the Shake UP Pacific Pines, he has stripped 12 kg’s of body fat, learned how to eat, rediscovered his passion for exercise and is back to his physical, mental and professional best.

We recently caught up with Paul to chat about how being fit and strong makes him a better Police officer.

So Paul …Tell us a little bit about yourself

I am a Family guy and have been a Police officer for 10.5 years now. I have been married to my beautiful wife Danelle for 14 years. We have 2 kids, Dylan 11 and Kiara 9. I am really enjoying where I am at right now, feeling better with more focus. It just makes work and family life so much easier when you feelgreat!

How long have you been training at the Shake UP?

It’s about 5 months now I think

Can you please tell us a bit about the place you were at before joining the Shake UP?

Yeah for sure, I joined the Shake Up to get my health and fitness life back on track i guess.

Before I started here I was 85kg and feeling sluggish. I was running regularly, like 5 to 10kms but not really changing shape or improving. As I am a shift worker my diet used to consist of coke and chocolate bars.

The thought of coming down here to train was pretty daunting at first. I thought it was just another boot camp where the trainer screams at everyone and coming through my Police training that was kind of like and I really don’t need to be yelled at these days. I guess that is one of the reasons I have avoided these group training programs for so long.

What keeps you coming back to the Shake UP?

It’s such a positive supportive place to train and as crazy as i sounds, it’s pretty fun to train here. I love that Danelle and I can both come here and train together and we can bring the kids along while we train. I think the time factor is important to us also, we are pretty busy so I like that this doesn’t take up hours of our week

What have you achieved at the Shake UP Paul?

I was 85kg’s when I started and now I am down to 72kg’s and I am still holding onto my muscle mass which I am happy about. I am running better and faster than I ever have. Coming off of the Challenge last year,we are eating really clean as a family which makes things more rewarding. I am really happy with the improved focus and energy at work.Doing shift hours gettings pretty tough and I have notice that I can’t just make better, faster decisions when I need to.

What’s the worst workout for you at the Shake UP?

Probably.. Broad jump burpees. They bloody killed me in our first session here at the Shake UP!. I couldn’t shave for days after that one!
