How many diets have you been on in your life?

12 months ago Bruce won our Spring 10 week challenge, stripping 10kg of fat off of his frame and surrounding himself with the knowledge, skills and support to make sure that he didn’t become one of the devastating Aussie diet statistics.

Bruce is our June Shaker of the month because for the past 12 months, this bloke has been bringing so much laughter, energy and spirit into our community. Not only that, he has successfully transformed his lifestyle around and continues his quest for self improvement!

We recently caught up with Bruce to celebrate his success and find out how he created his new normal:

Tell us about yourself Bruce?

Ok, I am 46 years old. I have been a registered nurse for 20 years, working in a variety of health care settings, emergency, intensive care and now I am working in cancer care. I am married to my beautiful wife Sally and between us we have 4 kids, 2 boys and 2 girls, 6,10,13 and 17.  Life is pretty busy for us but Sally and I get to train together and spend plenty of time together so life is great!

What was your health like 12 months ago?

12 months ago I was 10kg overweight and watching my motivated wife get out of bed 3 or 4 days a week to go and train at the Shake UP. I guess I had let some bad habits creep into my life and to be honest wasn’t really looking to make any big lifestyle changes until Sally asked me to go along to the Spring 2016, 10 Week Challenge information evening. At that event we both made a joint decision to give it a real go and get our lifestyle back on track!

How did you create a new normal for yourself?

10 weeks of discipline and creating positive habits around exercise and eating truly turned my life around! We ditched the booze for 10 weeks which is a pretty empowering thing to do. Proves I am not an alcoholic! Ha…Ha…I was able to strip 10kgs of fat and 10 cm off my waist line all through establishing great nutritional habits. 

I think the prep work was a huge success strategy for us. Making sure that we surrounded ourselves with food that was pretty easy to prepare, was tasty and easy to eat during a busy work day! Our fridge is always loaded with snacks and meals that aren’t full of processed junk and starchy carbs. 

Are you still applying the skills that you learned in the challenge?

Yep…We still follow the parameters that we were taught in the Challenge, staying conscious of getting the right carbohydrates, protein and fats in every meal. We have a pretty good understanding of nutrient timing and we make sure we load up on the good stuff after our workouts. The best part about this is we will continue to eat and live like this for many years to come. That’s why I think that this program appealed to us so much.
