Great leaders don’t tell you what to do, they show you how it is done! Our June Shaker of the month is a great leader, who is inspiring his 220 staff, managing a pumping 30,000 customer/week supermarket and a role model father. What makes Steve Teague different from so many other busy managers is that he understands life balance and he is actively doing something about it! We recently caught up with Stevo to chat about great leadership, being a great father and what really matters…..Fishing!
G’day Stevo. Can you please tell us a little bit about yourself?
Yep for sure… I have been happily married for 12 years!i have 3 great boys – 11,16 and 22 years old who are all into their sport. I love getting out on the weekends with the family.
I am the manager of Woolworths Stocklands here in Burleigh and this is a pumping million dollar/week business. It’s a pretty crazy place to work but i really love it. I manage 220 staff here and there are no easy days to be honest. There are some really great people here and that makes this place great. When I get time I really love fishing. It is just so relaxing and for me its a great way to de-stress.
How long have you been training at The Shake UP for mate?
Um… I reckon it would be about 2 months now.
Awesome mate. Can you give us an idea of how being physically and mentally fit improves you in here as a Leader?
Yeah for sure Benny….In these last 2 months since beginning the Shake UP, i have way more energy! That’s one of the biggest advantages. I feel loads stronger and more mentally ready for the obstacles in here because i don’t wake up tired any more. My role here is pretty involved and it can get mentally and physically draining when you are interacting with the staff and the 30,000 customers we have through here each week. Everyone wants a piece of you! I really love that about the job though and I am now understanding how much easier it is when i feel fitter and stronger.
What keeps you coming back to the Shake UP?
I remember my 1st session, i went there not knowing anyone and i didn’t take long to feel like I was a part of the group. I know the sessions are going to be horrendous and I love being pushed to my limits, but above all I know that when i am done I will always walk away from there and have had a few laughs, given it my all and to be honest i am always looking forward to the next one!
Whats your worst exercise?
Last nights Bear crawls really were pretty shit!
What are you hoping to achieve on your Shake up journey?
I guess get my body fat down a little further, I am already pulling back notches on my belt. Build some more strength and just continue to challenge myself!
Those who manage to balance work, family, fun and well being are the kind of people who are a pleasure to have around. Although Steve has only been a Shaker for a couple of months, its very clear and easy to see why he is a great leader and such a popular boss. A very deserved winner of our Shaker of the Month! A huge thanks goes out to our Sponsor Zarraffa’s Pacific Pines for the continued support, great service and amazing coffee!
