One of the 1st questions that we ask our 10-week challenge participants in week 1 is,
‘who has dieted at some stage in their life’?
The typical response is, ‘Yep…heaps of times’! It’s not unusual to go from one diet to another on the ever-illusive quest for that dream body.
Jumping from one diet to another, restricting calories and expecting the weight to drop off like it used to, is not the solution!
The truth is that as we age, we lose the capacity to build muscle and shed fat. The average adult can expect to lose around 0.25kgs of muscle mass every year from 30 to 60 years of age and gain approximately half a kilogram of body fat each year over that same time span. That’s a 7kg loss of muscle and a 15kg gain in body fat!

How do you lose weight and never find it again?
G’day Rick. Tell us a little bit about yourself…
Ok…I am 37 years old. My wife Bronwyn and I have been married for 14 years and going strong! We have 2 boys, Lewis 12 and Bailey 10. The boys are our inspiration and for me personally, they are my motivating factor when it comes to staying fit, active and healthy! Life is good. We enjoying camping trips, Stand Up Paddle boarding and just being an active family.
Can you give our readers an idea of where you have come from on your health and fitness journey?
Well it wasn’t that long ago that I was 35kg heavier and looking down the barrel of some serious health issues. I guess that was brought on by finding myself in a position of poor work/life balance. As a sales rep, I found myself working long hours, going from meeting to meeting and my eating habits were all out of whack.
I joined the Shake UP, jumped on the Winter Challenge and from there my entire life changed! I learned how to eat, I got organised and made it happen,winning the Challenge!
You are still improving, changing and discovering your full potential. How do you lose weight and never find it again?
I think it’s a personal choice – for me going into that challenge was never about diet or just a period of eating better. This was about eating real food for the rest of my life. I worked out which foods my body didn’t tolerate and which foods gave me loads of energy. I know how poor I felt 35 kg heavy and I never want to feel like that again!
It’s not a hard lifestyle and I think if you enjoy the food and work on an abundance attitude, you can make it last forever.
What keeps you coming back to the Shake UP Rick?
I love the community and as I develop and progress I am really enjoying supporting the rest of the crew to reach their goals. Being a part of the Shake UP has changed my life and I am so grateful.
